A Grand Café Becomes A Midtown Star

The National Bar & Dining Rooms is the culmination of internationally acclaimed Food Network chef Geoffrey Zakarian’s vision to bring true all-occasion dining to New York City’s Midtown.

The experience is inspired by the grand cafés of Europe and by classic American dining rooms, with a welcoming yet refined interior design by the Rockwell Group, bustling atmosphere, and great service. The menu at The National offers classic bistro dishes with Zakarian's signature Modern American touch - a style of cooking that earned him critical acclaim at his previous establishments TOWN and Country. Zakarian’s cuisine is fresh and accessible, concentrating on American ingredients prepared with French technique.

The James Beard Award-winning, grand cafe is located at The Benjamin - a restored 1927 Emery Roth hotel - an architectural landmark of the Beaux-Arts style and a fitting complement to the restaurant’s refined style, café culture, and eclectic interior design. Geoffrey Zakarian is the visionary behind The National, and one of the nation’s most widely celebrated chefs. Throughout his career, he has helmed internationally acclaimed kitchens such as 21 Club, 44 at the Royalton, The Delano, Patroon, TOWN, Country, The Lambs Club in NYC and Tudor House in Miami. As an arbiter of style and an accomplished chef, Chef Zakarian consistently utilizes his background of classic French cooking techniques and his innate sense of design to enhance the dining and hospitality experiences at his establishments.

Recently, Zakarian emerged victorious in the 4th Season of Food Network’s “The Next Iron Chef, Super Chefs.” He now appears regularly on “Iron Chef America,” demonstrating a razor-sharp knowledge of culinary techniques in this fast-paced cooking competition. When he’s not battling in kitchen stadium, Zakarian stays busy filming “CHOPPED”, where he is featured as a recurring judge, and highlights his favorite dishes on “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” In addition, Chef Zakarian has authored the cookbook, Geoffrey Zakarian's Town/Country: 150 Recipes for Life Around The Table, named Editor's Choice by The New York Times. William Harris

Classically-trained in the French tradition, William Harris' travels have led him to The National in Midtown Manhattan as Executive Chef under the seasoned leadership of Iron Chef Geoffrey Zakarian. Born into a mobile Navy family, Harris’ epicurean voyage began at 15, as he traveled the country relishing the different cultures and cuisines of each of his new surroundings.

A fellow graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Harris launched his career in San Diego at Chez Loma Bistro and Tartine Café as Chef de Cuisine, where he focused on local seafood, classic French cooking and developing relationships with local farmers. After working in San Diego for several years to open various locations and concepts, he began teaching the culinary arts at San Diego City College. It wasn’t long before the restaurant kitchen beckoned again, and he soon landed as "Opening Chef" for Fox Restaurant Concepts' True Food Kitchen – a position that allowed him to once again travel the country and connect with inspiring leaders and great chefs.

With his recent appointment, Harris has accomplished a lifelong goal to return to New York City as an Executive Chef.
